TUPPER LAKE — All the renovations, including improvements to the field and dugouts, haven’t gone to waste at Tupper Lake’s municipal baseball field along the shore of Raquette Pond.

A year ago, when the Empire Professional Baseball League announced that it will bring a team to the village this summer, crews quickly got to work on the field to get it ready for Tupper Lake’s newest team.

But with the EBPL not holding games in New York state this year due to the coronavirus, Tupper Lake’s River Pigs didn’t have a chance to step on the updated diamond, which has remained unused for much of the summer.

But on Thursday, it was “Play Ball” as the a pair of Under-14 local teams christened the field in a game held under the lights. The matchup featured a combined Tupper Lake-Saranac Lake Lakers squad coached by Haji Maroun and Bill Wilson, against Chadd Cassidy’s Adirondack Lightning team based in Lake Placid.

Although some rain fell and ultimately didn’t provide for ideal playing conditions, the game went on, with the Lightning emerging with a victory in the contest.
