Hayden second, Kelting third at state meet

Adrian Hayden placed second for the Saranac Lake boys and teammate Sophia Kelting took third in the girls race Monday on the opening day of the NYSPHSAA Nordic Ski Championships at Harriet Hollister Spencer State Recreation Area in Springwater.

Hayden was within striking distance of the boys individual winner, crossing the finish line of the 10-kilometer skate-style race in 33 minutes, 35.4 seconds. Rylan Hodgson, of Pittsford Sutherland, won the race in 33:32.5.

Lake Placid skiers Michael Skutt and Andrew Scanio finished seventh and eighth, while Colter Cheney-Seymour, of Saranac Lake, placed ninth with a time of 35:07.7. Skutt recorded a time of 34:25.4, followed by Scanio in 35:06.9.

Other local finishers were Lake Placid’s Max Flannigan (19th in 36:10.2), and Saranac Lakers Sam Ash (25th, 37:11.9), Nick Kelting (34th, 39:13.5), Reuben Bernstein (37th, 40:35.8) and Griffin Smith (38th, 41:24.5).

Forty-eight skiers finished the boys race.

Grace Mattern, of Brighton High school, won the girls 7.5k skate race with a time of 22:55.5. Madison Relyea, of Mayfield, was second in 23:02 and Sophia Kelting took third in 23:11.1.

Sylvie Linck finished fifth with a time of 23:31.4 for the Red Storm, while teammates Evelyn Eller (14th, 25:30.4), Bella Wissler (15th, 25:34.2) and Ruby Smith (46th, 30:14.8) were among the 47 finishers in the girls race.

Lynn Palen led the Lake Placid girls with her 20th-place finish in 26:16. She was followed by teammates Ellie Evans (35th, 27:56.5), Sydney Lawrence (40th, 29:05.9) and Harley Cohen (42nd, 29:23.1).

The Nordic Championships continue Tuesday in Hollister Spencer State Recreation Area with classic racing in a relay format.

ALPINE

Saranac Lake junior Andrew Fogarty finished second Monday in the NYSPHSAA Alpine Championships slalom race at Bristol Mountain in Canandaigua.

Fogarty recorded a first-run time of 38.87 seconds and followed with a 38.85 on his second run for a total time of 1:17.72. Hunter Montgomery, of Queensbury, won the slalom state title with a combined time of 1:16.09.

Other Saranac Lakers finishers in the boys race were Cole VanEtten (37th in 1:41.61), Will Miemis (40th, 1:45.31) and Blake McIntosh (41st, 1:46.82).

Zoe Carpenter was the top finisher for Saranac Lake in the girls race, placing 24th with a combined two-run time of 1:43.45. Teammates Mayah Land (1:55.79), Gisele Munson (1:57.10) and Audrey Bartlett (1:58.57) finished 47th through 49th.

Hannah Klingebiel, of Schenectady, won the girls slalom with a combined time of 1:29.80, outskiing a field of 60 starters.

Alpine racing continues Tuesday at Bristol Mountain.
