NYSEF skiers shine at Eldridge races

A host of NYSEF Nordic skiers had successful outings at the Harry Eldridge races held on Dec. 21-22 at the Gore Mountain Ski Bowl in North Creek.

The races featured classic and skate styles covering distances of 5 and 10 kilometers, and included male and female divisions ranging in age from under 16 to masters.

The event was a qualifier for the junior national championshps.

The classic races took place on Saturday, Dec. 21 with the skate competitions held the following day.

NYSEF skiers won the under-16 5k classic races, with Lake Placid’s Max Flanigan placing first for the boys in 13 minutes, 53.7 seconds, and Sophia Kelting of Paul Smiths finishing on top for the girls in 14:25.2.

Four Lake Placid skiers swept the top spots in the under-18 boys 10k classic race, with Kai Franz winning in a time of 25:29.4. James Flanigan finished runner-up, Mike Skutt placed third and Van Ledger rounded out the top four.

Lake Placid skiers also winning in the men’s 10k classic were Scott Schulz in the under-20, Karl Schulz in the men’s senior and Chris Beattie in the master men 9 division.

Maddie Relyea of Mayfield was the U18 girls champion in the 5k classic race, and Canton’s Natalie Jelley won the U20 older junior girls division.

In the skate race, Lake Placid skiers grabbed the top two positions in the boys U16 division, with Tate Franz earning the victory and Max Flanigan placing second.

Katrin Schreiner of the Saratoga Biathlon Club placed first in and extremely close girls 5k skate race with a finish time of :13:41.7. Sophia Kelting finished runner-upless than two seconds back, and Annie Rose-McCandlish of Wilmington finished third.

Van Ledger won the u18 boys 10k skate in 22:20.8 and was followed by Kai Franz in second place and Skutt in third.

Scott Schulz was the U20 winner and Karl Shulz took top honors in the senior men’s division.

Rochester’s Grace Mattern won the U18 girls 10k in 25:59.6. Marli Damp of Lake Placid placed third in that competition.

Natalie Jelley won the U20 girls division to claim her second victory in as many days, and Lake Placid’s Elizabeth Izzo was the senior women’s champion, finishing in 27:35.
