HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Storm girls battle back, but fall short

SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake girls basketball team made a big run in the second quarter Wednesday, but Plattsburgh was still able to hold on for a 50-39 victory over the Red Storm.

The Hornets stormed out of the gate and took a 14-2 lead in the first quarter, but the Red Storm put 20 points on the board in the second to go into the locker room at halftime trailing 25-22.

“I could not be happier for how hard my girls played tonight,” Saranac Lake coach Chad LaDue said. “They could have let it get away after the first quarter, but they keep on fighting and didn’t stop till the end.”

LaDue said his team was hampered by foul trouble all game as Plattsburgh outscored Saranac Lake 16-4 at the foul line.

Kelsey Leeret led the Red Storm in scoring with 12 points. Teammates Jasmine Bova and Madison Clark turned in their best games of the year, according to LaDue. Bova scored eight points and Clark hit for five.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Keene 51, Lake Placid 26

LAKE PLACID — The Keene boys basketball team took control early and never looked back on the way to a 51-26 victory over Lake Placid on Wednesday.

Keene’s Aidan Lopez led all scorers in the game with 18 points, while teammate Sebastian Smith chipped in 14.

Jack Armstrong paced the Blue Bombers with 10 points.

GIRLS HOCKEY

Massena 4,

Saranac Lake Placid 2

MASSENA — The Massena girls hockey team scored the first three goals of the game Wednesday on the way to a 4-2 victory over Saranac Lake Placid.

Dariana Patterson scored SLP’s first goal at the 13:55 mark of the second period on an unassisted power play goal. Massena scored its fourth goal of the game within the first minute of the third period then SLP’s Annabelle Bombard-Schmidtt scored the game’s final goal about 30 seconds later.

Massena posted a 30-28 advantage in shots for the game. Olivia Ferebee stopped 26 shots in goal for SLP.

Saranac Lake Placid hits the road against next week to take on Franklin Academy on Tuesday.
