LAKE PLACID — Five players from the Lake Placid boys soccer team were named Northern Soccer League Division II all-stars.

Matt Brandes and Tyler Hinckley were first-team picks and Brendan Bullock, Connor Reid and Cooper Grady were second-team selections from a Blue Bombers squad that saw its season end with 1-0 loss to Saranac Lake in the Section VII, Class C championship match.

Brandes, a junior, stepped into a new position for the Blue Bombers during the 2019 season, and as sweeper, the third-year varsity team member was steady, smart and played with confidence.

“There was no way Matty Brandes throught he would end up at sweeper at the beginning of the year,” Lake Placid coach Stuart Hemsley said. “He did a great job back there. He didn’t mess up.”

Hinckley is a senior defender who lined up at left back for Lake Placid.

“He’s fast, and our plan was to play with him moving forward,” Hemsley said. “I’d rather play with him than play against him.”

Reid, a senior, lined up at center midfield for the Blue Bombers and was a threat from long range and handled taking most of the team’s goal kicks and free kicks. The second-year varsity player finished with five goals, which all came from outside the 18-yard box.

“Conner strikes the ball as well as anybody, and he came up with some big goals for us,” Hemsley said.

As a sophomore, Bullock made an immediate impact for Lake Placid as a solid defender and as a threat on offense. He finished the season with three goals.

“Brendan Bullock started every single game for us,” Hemsley said. “He’s strong as an ox, and I expected him to be a future leader for my team.”

Grady, a junior, may have been Lake Placid’s biggest threat on the attack in 2019. He finished with seven goals, including his biggest of the season, a score that lifted the Blue Bombers to a 1-0 victory over AuSable Valley in the Class C semifinal round.

“Cooper is a dangerous forward with great speed,” Hemsley said. “I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do next season.”

Lake Placid ended the 2019 campaign with a 7-5-4 overall record.
