Saranac Lake’s girls took a first place result Saturday in the high school nordic relay races at the North Creek Ski Bowl.

Sylvie Linck, Sophia Kelting and Bella Wissler teamed up to top a field of 21 relay trios from a host of schools. They turned in a combined time of 27 minutes, 31.5 seconds to win a close race over runner-up Mayfield High School, which consisted of Fianna Halloran, Madison Relyea and Tatjana Bjelica. They finished a little more than seven seconds back.

Lake Placid’s girls grabbed third place, with Annie Rose McCandlish, Harley Cohen and Lynn Palen turning in a combined time of 31:58.9.

Teams from Johnsburg and Queensbury rounded out the top five.

The Red Storm and Blue Bombers entered two teams each in the girls relay.

Lake Placid’s second team of Ellie Evans and Haille Cook brought in Saranac Lake’s Leena Keal to complete their squad and finished 11th in :39:14.3. Saranac Lake placed 15th, with Ruby Smith, Eleanor Crowley and Emma Wood turning in a time of :40:45.0.

In the boys race, trios from Lake Placid and Saranac Lake finished in second and third place.

The Blue Bombers were runner-up, with Mike Skutt, Max Flanigan and Andrew Scanio combined for a :24:39.9 finish. They were more than a minute behind an impressive Queensbury relay squad that won the race. The winners turned in a :23:17.3 total and consisted of Lucas Jenkin, Nick Logan and Teddy Borgos.

Nick Kelting, Colter Cheney-Seymour and Reuben Bernstein skied to a third-place finish for the Red Storm with a :26:12.2 combined time.

Skiers from Queensbury and Glens Falls finished fourth and fifth to complete the top five in a field of more than 30 boys teams.

The Red Storm had two more teams competing with Griffin Smith, Sam Ash and Jackson Small taking 14th place in :30:38.5; and Aidan Hesseltine, Jacob Duryea and Morgan Martin finishing 24th in :41:04.6. Finn Donahue and Will Tanzey also participated as skiers representing Lake Placid and Saranac Lake.

Red Storm nordic coach Keith Kogut said both his skiers and the Blue Bombers had solid early-season performances in the relays, and was especially pleased to see Saranac Lake’s girls come out on top.

“This was a great early-season test for our skiers,” Kogut said. “We have a lot of hard work ahead of us, but our girls showed today that they can be contenders at the State Championships in February. Our varsity boys still have some work to do, but with our full complement of skiers, and more time to train and improve, I’m confident that our boys will continue to get faster as well.”
