SL boys, girls are CVAC champs

CLINTONVILLE — Still unbeaten and now the champions of the Champlain Valey Athletic Conference.

On Tuesday, the Saranac Lake boys and girls cross country teams both moved to 18-0 and also clinched CVAC regular-season titles in the process at a meet at AuSable Valley.

The Red Storm teams knocked off Saranac Central and host AuSable Valley to tack two more wins onto their so far perfect league seasons.

The boys, who are New York state’s defending Class C champions, topped the Chiefs 16-43 and handed the Patriots a 15-46 setback. The girls really came up big to stay undefeated by edging perennial CVAC power Saranac by a 27-28 score. The Red Storm girls also topped AuSable Valley 20-41.

Red Storm runners James Catania and Peter Fogarty took the two top spots in the boys race. Catania won in 16 minutes, 51 seconds and Forgarty was close behind with a 16:57 finish time. Lake Placid’s Mike Skutt placed third in 18:09, Saranac Lake’s Micah McCulley was fourth in 18:23 and Spencer Daby of AuSable Valley rounded out the top five in 18:09.

Saranac Lake’s girls grabbed third, fourth and fifth place to help their team secure a pair of wins. Katie Samperi led the Red Storm in third with a 22:30 result, Makenzie Converse followed in fourth with a 22:44 finish, and Gwen Mader was fifth in 22:45.

Saranac Central’s Rachel Woodruff won the race in 19:35 and the Patriots’ Lilly Pothast was runnner-up in 20:01.
