Red Storm run with the big boys

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The 38th annual Burnt Hills Invitational drew more than 1,000 runners from around the northeast to Saratoga Spa State Park on Saturday, and local runners turned in solid showings.

The defending Class C state champion Saranac Lake boys placed seventh overall out of 28 teams in the Division III, large school division with a total score of 217. Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, last year’s Class B state champion, won the large school title with 83 points, just ahead of Guilderland with 85. Saratoga Springs finished with 216 points to edge the Red Storm for sixth place.

The Lake Placid boys finished second in the Division I, small school race with 113 points, trailing only Honeoye Central with 98.

The Saranac Lake girls team placed third in the Division I race with 121 points. Mount Greylock (76) was first and Harley Allendale Columbia took second with 95 points.

James Catania was Saranac Lake’s top finisher in the boys race. He covered the course in 15:34.28, recording an average speed of 5:07.4 per mile for eighth place. Peter Fogarty was the next Red Storm runner across the line with a 12th-place finish in 15:43.49, while Andrew Fogarty placed 20th in 15:59.35.

Other Saranac Lake finishers were Micah McCulley, who was 89th in 17:02.33, Tucker Jakobe (90th in 17:02.65) and Sam Ash (91st in 17:03.30). Catania, the Fogarty brothers, McCulley and Jakobe are all juniors, while Ash is a freshman.

Henry Farrington, of Essex High School, won the Division III race in 15:05.59.

Sara Trabakoulus and Gwen Mader led the way for the Saranac Lake girls team. Trabakoulus, a sophomore, placed 24th in the Division I race with a time of 21:03.64, followed by Mader in 25th with a 21:06.17. Harley Cohen, an eighth-grader on the Lake Placid team, occupied the 26th-place position in 21:08.18.

Kate Swann, of Mount Greylock, won the Division I girls race in 18:29.06, outrunning Lily Pothast, of AuSable Valley, who finished second in 18:37.60.

Saranac Lake sophomore Katie Samperi placed 32nd in 21:34.24, while Sylvie Linck was 42nd in 22:00.05 and Bella Wissler took 43rd in 22:02.23 for the Red Storm.

Lake Placid’s Alexa Harper placed 58th in the Division I race with a time of 22:31.13.

The Lake Placid boys were led by Mike Skutt, who placed fifth in the Division I race with a time of 16:51.93. Teammate Max Flanigan took 13th in 17:34.27, James Flanigan was 25th in 18:02.77, Andrew Scanio was 40th in 18:23.88 and Gunnar Anthony finished 46th in 18:35.53.

Andrew Drescher, of Duanesburg, won the Division I boys race in 15:42.26, while Jake Glickman, of Seton Catholic, was second in 16:06.97 and Logan Van Buren, of Moriah/Boquet Valley, took third in 16:06.97.

Saranac Lake and Lake Placid return to action Tuesday for Champlain Valley Athletic Conference meet in Moriah.
