Local runners take on the best

PLATTSBURGH — The Saranac Lake, Lake Placid and Tupper Lake cross country teams got a preview of the state championships course at SUNY Plattsburgh, and took on some of the state’s best runners in the process Saturday at the Section VII (Pre-States) Cross Country Invitational.

The defending Class C state champion Saranac Lake boys team turned in several top performances, led by junior James Catania, who finished fifth in the Boys 2 race with a time of 16:30.6. He was trailed closely by teammate Peter Fogarty, another junior, who placed sixth in 16:33.7. Sam Lawler, of Pittsford Mendon, won the Boys 2 race in 15:32.4 and was the fastest overall runner of the day.

Saranac Lake juniors Micah McCulley (17:11.8) and Andrew Fogarty (17:13.5) placed 24th and 25th. Tucker Jakobe placed 32nd in 17:31.6 and Justin Duprey was 60th in 18:43.9.

In the Boys 3 race, Mike Skutt, of Lake Placid, placed sixth in 17:21.6, while teammates James Flanigan finished 25th in 18:24.8, Max Flanigan was 44th in 19:15.1 and Gunnar Anthony took 57th in 20:10.7.

Patrick Cote, of Tupper Lake, finished 64th in the race with a time of 20:33.9 and Gitch Hayes, of LaSalle Institute, won the race in 16:11.6.

Katie Samperi led the Saranac Lake girls team in the Girls 2 race with a 48th-place finish in 22:20.5. Teammate Sylvie Linck was 48th in 22:25.2, Sara Trabakoulus was 51st in 22:33.9, Gwen Mader placed 52nd in 22:37.5 and Bella Wissler took 54th in 22:40.1.

Brooke Rauber, of Tully, won the Girls 2 race in 17:38.3.

Lake Placid eighth-grader Harley Cohen led the Blue Bombers in the Girls 3 race with a 31st-place finish in 22:32.6, while Sandra Kwasniak paced Tupper Lake with a 47th-place finish in 23:39.8.

Vernon-Verona-Sherrill runner Delaney Brewer won the Girls 3 race in 18:57.7.

The top overall girls runner of the meet was Rauber, while Rachael Woodruff, of Saranac Central, placed 10th as Section VII’s top finisher.

Catania was 14th overall in the combined results, while Peter Fogarty was 17th.

Saranac Lake and Lake Placid will run in another elite invitational this weekend when they head to Rochester for the McQuaid Invitational.
