PLATTSBURGH — The Saranac Lake Surge baseball team dropped the second game of a five-game series Thursday against the Plattsburgh Thunderbirds, 7-3.

Plattsburgh took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth, but Saranac Lake’s Tyler Hill put one over the left field fence to bring in two runs in the top of the fifth inning, giving the Surge a 2-1 lead. The lead didn’t last long, however, as the Thunderbirds got home run happy and put up another three runs in the bottom of the fifth, one in the bottom of the sixth and another two in the bottom of the eighth.

Saranac Lake fell to 3-5 on the season after Plattsburgh won the first game of the series 9-6 on Wednesday.

Surge manager Ken Matsuzaka said the team is looking forward to playing its first home game, which is slated for Thursday, July 4.

“It’s been great; we just started the season, so some players are getting better, some are not quite ready,” he said. “But they’re getting better every day.

“We’re very excited. We’re just going to have fun, play ball. We want to show off what we’ve got in this league.”

The Surge will call the Saranac Lake High School baseball team’s field at Petrova Avenue home this season. The series against Plattsburgh continues Friday at Lefty Wilson Field at noon, and then again on Saturday at 3 p.m. The series wraps up Sunday with a game under the lights at 7 p.m.

With Thursday’s victory, Plattsburgh improved to 6-0 and remained the only unbeaten club in the six-team Empire Professional Baseball League.

After finishing their series against the Thunderbirds, the Surge will have three days off to prepare for their home-opener, which will be on July 4 against the Road City Explorers starting at 1 p.m.
