Summer lacrosse season opens in LP

LAKE PLACID — The first of four major lacrosse events, conducted by Summit Lacrosse Ventures, faces off this weekend in Lake Placid, all leading up to the 30th annual Lake Placid Summit Classic August 5-11.

It begins Saturday and Sunday with the High Peaks Summit Classic. Born from an overflow of teams requesting entry into the August event, the HPSC, for men 18 years of age and older, was created to enable those teams to experience lacrosse against the backdrop of Lake Placid’s breathtaking scenery and Olympic legacy. A first responder division is included. The top two teams from the HPSC will receive invitations to participate in the August tournament.

As the HPSC teams clear the North Elba Show Grounds on Sunday, the Lake Placid Summit Youth Classic moves in with 60 boys’ teams competing in seven divisions. The LPSYC takes place July 1-3.

Lake Placid is also the site of the Northstar Invitational July 29-Aug. 1. Started in 2012, the event is a showcase for 130 women student/athletes who will hone and display their skills before 35 coaches representing many of the nation’s top collegiate programs. Moreover, the Northstar Invitational’s mission is to enhance the personal development of these young women through interaction with the event’s coaches, staff and overall environment.

As an added bonus, Summit Lacrosse Ventures has announced a multi-year partnership with Nike as the Presenting Sponsor and Official Apparel Supplier of Northstar Lacrosse. Nike will supply each attending athlete with a custom gear kit.

The Summit Classic in August is the grand finale with more than 250 male and female teams turning Lake Placid into the epicenter of the lacrosse world for one week. It begins with high school competition, and by mid-week, segues into adults and masters.

Ancillary events include the addition of four past competitors to the Legends of Lake Placid Lax community. This ceremony will be held Aug. 8 at the Olympic Ski Jumping Complex, and will also officially mark 30 years of Lake Placid lacrosse. Also, the Lax All Stars Grow The Game Award will be issued.

Summit Lacrosse Ventures will also lend its voice in support of the sport’s return to the Olympic Games. A seminar, including World Lacrosse, the sport’s international governing body, will be held at a time and date during tournament week.
