SL boys qualify eight for state meet

CLINTONVILLE — After finishing as the unbeaten champions during the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference season, and following with a runner-up finish in the Section VII championship meet, the Saranac Lake boys track and field team had another memorable outing Friday at the state qualifying meet at AuSable Valley.

The Red Storm boys won six individual events and one relay at the meet and will send eight student-athletes to the New York State Public High School track and field championships being held at Middletown High School Friday and Saturday, June 7-8.

Saranac Lake’s girls will also send four members of their team to the state meet after posting three wins at the qualifier.

Like they have all season, Saranac Lake’s boys swept the throwing events with Patrick Alberga winning the shot put with a toss of 50 feet, 1.75 inches and Jonathan Hewitt taking first in the discus with a 127-11 heave.

On the track, James Catania won the 3,200 in 10:10.38, Micah McCulley took the 800 in 2:02.59, and Nick Kelting grabbed the 400 meter victory in 52.79.

Patrick Wamsganz, a junior, will head to Middletown to compete in the pentathalon after claiming the victory in that event Friday.

Peter Fogarty will run in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. That event was not held on Friday, but Fogarty pre-qualified for the state meet when he won the race in 10:18.81 at the Van Dusen Invitational in Ogdensburg on May 19.

Saranac Lake also captured first place in the 4×800 relay with a winning time of 8:31:46. The team is made up of McCulley, Catania, Anderson Gray and Peter Fogarty.

Edina Cecunjanin had an impressive performance to lead Saranac Lake’s girls. The senior will compete in three events at next week’s state meet after posting three victories in the qualifier. Cecunjanin took first in the 200 in 27.32, she won the 400 in 1:04.06, and joined Grace Clark, Hailey Cornell and Lydia Wamsganz to win the 4×100 relay in 52.31.

The Lake Placid girls also posted a first-place, winning the 4×400 relay in 4:19.71. The results from that event, however, were not listed as official at press time.
