HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Red Storm softball earns spot in sectional semifinals
SARANAC LAKE — For the second year in a row, the Saranac Lake softball team is heading to the Section VII, Class C semifinal round. The Red Storm advanced with a quarterfinal victory at home Friday, topping Moriah 14-8.
Although no stats from the game were available at press time, Saranac Lake coach Suzanne Nicholas said her team got off to a slow start and had to rally from a 6-3 deficit.
“It wasn’t a good start, and then we picked up the pace and got our bats going,” Nicholas said. “We got some extra bases on some passed balls, we scored a couple runs on passed balls. Another good day of base running.”
Nicholas said she brought up some junior varsity players for the postseason and one of those freshmen, Taylor Whitson, made her debut as a courtesy runner. She gained two bases on passed balls and got stranded at third.
The Red Storm is the third seed in Class C and will next travel to face second-seed Ticonderoga on Tuesday in a semifinal matchup slated to start at 4:30 p.m.
The Sentinels posted a two-game sweep over the Red Storm during the regular season.
“We can’t get off to a slow start against them,” Nicholas said. “We have to be on our game right from the start.”
