HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Red Storm notch first victory

SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake baseball team is in the win column.

On Monday, the Red Storm earned their first victory of the season, topping Moriah 6-5 at home in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference action.

In a matchup that started off close and went down to the wire, the Red Storm pulled ahead for good when they scored a single run in the bottom of the sixth to grab a 6-4 edge. Saranac Lake then clinched the victory in dramatic fashion with Moriah batting in the top of the seventh.

Trailing by two runs in what proved to be their final trip to the plate, the Vikings loaded up the bases with one out. A Moriah batter then ripped a single into center to score one run, but on the play, Vikings, senior Dyllon Bougor tried to reach home from second. However, Red Storm centerfielder Jacob Shipman gunned him down at the plate with a perfect throw to catcher Jaden Gladd, who made the tag for the second out of the inning. Red Storm pitcher Ben Munn then fanned the next batter to end the game.

“The play of the game was Shipman’s throw to the plate,” Red Storm head coach Kyle Mochol said. “It was an absolute laser, no-bounce throw that Gladd didn’t even have to move on. It was a really big play. We had a chance to win our last game; we lost it in extra innings, and we didn’t want to face that situation again. Shipman’s throw was key.”

Munn went the distance on the mound for Saranac Lake to earn the win. Despite giving up 10 hits, including nine singles, Munn was able to fan 13 batters in the contest. He was also aided by a Red Storm defense that finished the game with just a single error.

Although the Red Storm finished with just four hits in the game, Mochol said his team finally started connecting at the plate against the Vikings.

“Our bats certainly came alive in this game,” he said. “We were hitting the ball, but a lot of those went right at their players. Our guys were really striking the ball well, we were stringing together hits, and that’s a real positive for us. Defensively, we had a really sound day.”

Dylan Stewart recorded one RBI for Saranac Lake, and Gladd also batted home the winning run in the bottom of the sixth.

Bougor led Moriah with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, Alex Lorrow added two hits in the loss and Jerin Sargent swatted one double for the Vikings.

“It was nice to see our kids step up when it counted the most,” Mochol said. “I think were starting to knock off the rust.”
