HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Red Storm golfers get past Seton

RAY BROOK — The Saranac Lake golf team notched its second victory of the season Thursday, topping Seton Catholic 3.5-2.5 in a close match.

The Red Storm improved to 2-1 in the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference with the win on their home course at the Saranac Lake Golf Club in Ray Brook.

Saranac Lake got victories from Will McClure, Carson Ryan and Noah Jewtraw, and Zach Churco also picked up a half point for the Red Storm for tying his match.

Churco, a junior playing in the top spot for Saranac Lake, was the co-medalist along with his opponent, Seton Catholic’s John Glover, after they finished even with low rounds of 45.

McClure played in the second spot for the Red Storm and triumphed 47-52 over Foster Ovios.

Ryan earned his point in the third pairing and the closest match of the day, one that came down to the wire. In the end, the Red Storm freshman fired at a 50 to edge Nate Boule of the Knights by a single stroke.

Noah Jewtraw also won for Saranac Lake, defeating Tekla Fine-Lease 58-66 in the No. 5 match.

Neil Yang and Thomas Deremiah picked up wins for the Knights. Yang fired a 56 to top Saranac Lake’s Evan Hochwald at No. 4, and Deremiah shot a 71 to claim a four-stroke win over Will Petrie of the Red Storm in the sixth match.

Ticonderoga 15, Saranac Lake 7

SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake baseball team had a nice day at the plate Thursday but still was unable to secure its first win of the season as Ticonderoga walked away with a 15-7 victory.

The Sentinels built a 10-5 lead after five innings then tacked on five more in the sixth to take control of the game. The Red Storm scored two in the bottom of the seventh.

Saranac Lake racked up 10 total hits, with Jaden Gladd and Carter Sturgeon each going 2-for-3. Quin Peer chipped in three RBI and Ben Munn recorded a double for the Red Storm.

Ticonderoga collected 11 hits in the game.

GIRLS TENNIS

Lake Placid 5, AuSable Valley 0

LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid girls tennis team won by a sweep Thursday, blanking AuSable Valley 5-0.

Playing at home, the Blue Bombers got singles wins from Barrett Smith, Jillian Robinson and Karis Hudson and a doubles victory by Reagan Levitt and Sam Jubin. Lake Placid’s fifth point came on a forfeit at second doubles.

In the top singles match, Smith defeated Quinn Herringshaw 6-1, 6-1. Robinson blanked Raychell Jerdo 6-0, 6-0 in second singles, and Hudson topped Katie Rondeau 6-3, 6-0 in third singles.

Levitt and Jubin topped Brynnly Hoffman and Emily LeClair 6-1, 6-4 for Lake Placid’s win at first doubles. The two Blue Bombers won the last five games in the second set after starting off with a 4-1 deficit.

Haley Giroux and Melanie Megliorie were slated at second doubles for Lake Placid and won by forfeit.

The Blue Bombers girls improved to 2-1 in the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference with the win.
