Big 6th inning lifts Blue Bombers past Vikings

LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid baseball team played its first home game of the season on Saturday, and thanks to a monster sixth inning, the Blue Bombers pulled away for a 12-4 victory over Moirah.

The Blue Bombers broke a 4-4 tie by scoring eight runs in the bottom of the sixth.

After a scoreless first inning, Lake Placid sent two runners across the plate in the bottom of the second to go up 2-0. The Bombers continued to move well on the bases, taking advantage of a number of wild pitches by Moriah. But the Vikings held strong and kept the home team off the board until late in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Moriah’s pitching struggled, walking several Lake Placid batters and hitting a couple of others. With the bases loaded and two outs, Blue Bomber Scott Sharlow came to the plate and with a base hit brought home two teammates to give Lake Placid a 4-0 advantage.

The Vikings rallied in the top of the fifth, when Sharlow was pulled off the mound due to the pitch count. Jesse Izzo took over and allowed Moriah to tie it the score 4-4 before he fanned Todd Malbon to end the inning.

The Blue Bombers went three up, three down in the bottom of the fifth, but the home team was far from done.

Lake Placid’s Jake Coursen took over pitching duties in the top of the sixth, and struck out three Moriah batters in a row to put the home team back on offense, setting the stage for the Blue Bombers’ big sixth inning.

Lake Placid senior Gage Perry led off and was hit by a pitch, and Matt Brandes followed by ripping a shot to right field, which turned into a triple on an error and sent Perry across the plate to put the Blue Bombers back in the lead. From there, it was a free-for-all for the home team as Moriah shuffled through five more pitchers.

Izzo brought home another run and then moved to third base on a wild pitch to Sharlow. With one out and runners at first and third, Coursen came to the plate and was walked to load the bases. The Bombers then expanded their lead to 12-4 as they went through their entire batting rotation twice. Coursen then went three up, three down from the mound in the top of the seventh to end the game.

Despite the win, Coursen said his team still had some things to work on.

“Honestly, I don’t think we played well at all,” the senior said. “We need to get in the gym on rainy days, and we need to hit the ball. A wiffle ball or whatever it is, we need to make contact.

“I think we’re playing well, but like I said we have some stuff to work on.”

Moriah coach Casey Nephew said his team played well for six of the seven innings.

“For six innings, we played well,” he said. “Mark (Maye) got to the limit for the pitch count, and we’re going to need him for next week so rather than let him get one more batter we pulled him and we kind of just ran out of pitching.

“The other guys came in and tried to throw strikes, but it is what it is.”

Moriah fell to 1-7 overall on the season with the loss.

Lake Placid coach Brian Brandes, like Coursen, was somewhat disappointed with the win, noting that the team rarely gets to practice due to weather and a tight spring sports schedule.

“Any win is a good win. It wasn’t pretty, but pretty wins in the North Country are hard to come by,” he said. “We want to work on fielding. We made some mistakes; base running — we made some mistakes.

“The problem is, we’re filled with games. And when it’s raining we don’t have a game and we don’t come out and practice. So you can tell by the play that it’s going downhill. So we’re going to have to force ourselves to go into the gym again just to do something on those off days.”

Lake Placid improved to 3-3 on the season with the win, and hosts AuSable Valley on Monday at the North Elba Show Grounds at 4:30 p.m.
