HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Saranac Lake swings to victory over Lake Placid

LAKE PLACID — Saranac Lake’s softball players got their bats going big time in a 22-10 victory over Lake Placid on Friday in a Champlain Valley Athletic Conference matchup on the Blue Bombers’ field.

The Red Storm pounded out 17 hits, including nine that went for extra bases in the victory. Six players had multiple hits for Saranac Lake, and catcher Maddie Gay led the way, going 3-for-5 with a home run and four runs scored.

Amya Hurteau and Maggie Carpenter each smacked a triple and a double in the win, Katie Gay contributed a triple, Annabelle Bombard-Schmidt collected two doubles, and Madie Reardon also chipped in with a double.

Katie Gay pitched a complete game. The junior struck out two, walked five and gave up 10 hits.

After giving up three runs in the top of the first inning, Lake Placid struck back to grab a 4-3 edge in its first at-bat, taking advantage of two Red Storm errors and a triple by freshman Danaya Patterson that knocked in two of those runs.

Saranac Lake jumped ahead with single runs in the top of the second and third innings, and the Blue Bombers then regained the lead, answering with three runs in their third at-bat to move the score to 7-5.

The Red Storm took over from there by piling on multiple runs in each of the next three innings, including 10 in the sixth, to improve to 2-1 in CVAC play.

In addition to rapping out a triple, Patterson led Lake Placid with four runs scored. Sophomore Grace Crawford also doubled for the Blue Bombers, who fell to 0-3.

GOLF

Lake Placid 3 1/2, Ticonderoga 2 1/2

TICONDEROGA — The Lake Placid golf team kicked off the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference season with a win, defeating Ticonderoga 3 1/2-2 1/2 on Thursday at the Sentinels’ course.

Playing in the top position for the Blue Bombers, junior Hunter Wilmot won medalist honors in the match, firing a 45 to defeat Ticonderoga’s Zach Bush. Jack Armstong and Brady Trembley earned Lake Placid’s other two victories, and Noah Tavares finished tied with his opponent to pick up a half point for Lake Placid.

Armstrong won the No. 2 match, defeating Ticonderoga’s Bobby Condit 49-56. Trembley competed in the fourth spot for the Blue Bombers and topped Ben Swajger 48-59. Tavares and Mike Fitzgerald of the Sentinels finished even in the third pairing, both shooting rounds of 57.

Cole Jacques and Jackson Smith both suffered setbacks for Lake Placid playing in the fifth and sixth spots. Jacques was defeated 53-57 by Gavin Fleury, and Smith fell to Clay Spaulding 56-68.
