HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: LP girls grab hoops win

NEWCOMB — The Lake Placid girls basketball team used a big third quarter to take control of what became a 43-24 victory over Minerva-Newcomb on Tuesday night.

Deidra Kellerman scored 14 points and Natalie Tavares hit for 11 to lead the way offensively for the Blue Bombers. Grace Crawford chipped in eight points and Sara Rose-McCandlish contributed six.

Lake Placid went into the locker room at halftime with an 18-10 lead, and used a strong defensive effort in the third to increase the advantage to 31-16 going into the fourth.

With the win, the Blue Bombers now stand at 5-5 in Mountain and Valley Conference games and 7-11 overall.

NORDIC SKIING

SARANAC LAKE — In a 4.8-kilometer Nordic ski race at Dewey Mountain on Tuesday, the Saranac Lake boys took four of the top five spots, while the home team girls took three of five against Section VII rival Lake Placid.

Adrian Hayden led the way for the boys with a finish time of 13 minutes, 18 seconds and was followed across the line by teammate Colter Cheney-Seymour (13:26). Senior captain Jacob Alberga took third in 14:28 and Nick Kelting (14:44) placed fourth. Kai Frantz, of Lake Placid, rounded out the top five with a 14:45.

On the girls’ side, Sylvie Linck (14:38) was the fastest, while eighth-grade standout Sophia Kelting (16:00) took second. Blue Bombers’ skier Lura Johnson (16:35) placed third and teammate Lynn Palen (16:58) finished in fourth. Saranac Lake’s Evelyn Eller (17:06) placed fifth.

The two teams face off again today at Mount Van Hoevenberg at 3:45 p.m.
