Top-seeded Plattsburgh ends SL’s season

PLATTSBURGH — The Saranac Lake hockey team saw its season end in a 3-0 semifinal hockey loss to Plattsburgh on Thursday.

Playing on the road at the Ameri-Can North Arena, the Red Storm had a tough task on top as they faced Section VII’s top-seeded squad and the third-ranked Division II team in the New York Sportswriters Association poll.

Saranac Lake got off to rocky start by giving up three goals in the opening period, and as it turned out, that’s all the Hornets scored, and that’s all they needed to advance to the championship game, which will be against Northeastern Clinton, which also won in a shutout Thursday, blanking Beekmantown 6-0.

Alex Kneifel, Nate Boule and Tyler Reid netted Plattsburgh’s goals, and Kyle Side earned the win in nets. The Hornets dominated play on offense and outshot the Red Storm 35-12. Junior Bruno Freeman recorded 32 saves between the pipes for Saranac Lake, which entered the playoffs as the fourth seed and finished with a 9-12-1 record.

Plattsburgh improved to 18-2-1 overall and will take on a third-seeded Cougars squad with a 17-4-1 record. The Section VII final will take place at SUNY Plattsburgh’s Stafford Arena on Tuesday starting at 7:30 p.m.
