SARANAC LAKE — The Paul Smith’s College bowling team had a rare match at home on Sunday, and the Bobcats came out on top to defeat Castleton College of Vermont.

In a close competition, Paul Smith’s won by 88 pins. The ‘Cats won the three-game series contests 2,607-2,535, and then took the Baker game contest — where players on the same team bowl alternate frames — 896-880.

Ben McInerney of Paul Smith’s had the high series in the match with a 691, and teammate Kalei Fenn was runner-up with a 625 three-game total.

Sunday marked just the third time Paul Smith’s has competed in a dual match, and it was the ‘Cats’ first victory in that format. They dropped a pair of matches to Adirondack Community College earlier in the season.

Since the past weekend was a holiday and school was not in session Monday, many members of the team were away, including Taylor West and Jessica Korkemaz, who are the defending individual men’s and women’s champions in the Yankee Small College Conference.

Although the bowlers from Paul Smith’s don’t see a lot of competition, they do spend plenty of time on the lanes and they are very successful. The Bobcats have won four straight team titles and have captured a slew of individual crowns at the YSCC championships, which will be held in Concord, New Hampshire on April 7 and 8. Paul Smiths has won the team title five out of the last six years.

Head coach Phil Muha said he started the season with a roster of 24 last semester and currently has 17 students on the team.

“I have a mix of a little bit of everything,” Muha said. “I really only have one top-end bowler averaging over 200 in Taylor West, and I have a lot of people averaging around 180 or above. There’s a lot competition among the team. This is not the strongest team I’ve had, but we’re still going to do very well. I have a lot of confidence in this team.”

In addition to their few competitions, Paul Smith’s bowlers practice each week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at their home house, Romano’s Saranac Lanes. The Bobcats will face Castleton again Sunday in Vermont at the Rutland Bowlerama, which is the home lanes of the Spartans.
