Athletes get it done in classroom

SARANAC LAKE — Of the six teams that competed during the fall for Saranac Lake football, two of those squads were champions on the field. Those squads were the girls volleyball and the boys cross country teams.

Although the other four Red Storm teams may not have been the top dogs when it came to wins and losses, they did excel in the classroom, and the same goes for the two units that will be hanging up championship banners in the school gymnasium.

This fall, all six Saranac Lake teams were honored as Scholar Athlete Teams by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.

In addition to volleyball and boys cross country, Saranac Lake’s football, girls cross country and boys and girls soccer teams showed that they have what it takes when it comes to academics. To receive Scholar-Athlete team recognition with a certificate, each team’s average GPA for 75 percent of the roster must be greater than or equal to 90.00, and the Red Storm came through in a big way as a total of 82 student-athletes carried 90 or above averages for the first quarter of the school year.

Girls cross country led the way with 18 team members achieving that GPA. Girls soccer and football had 16 each on the list, boys cross country and soccer had 12 each and the volleyball team had eight team members reaching or surpassing that number.
