SL boys stay unbeaten in XC

CADYVILLE — The Saranac Lake Red Storm boys cross country running team captured three wins over Saranac, Ticonderoga and Schroon Lake at a Cadyville meet Tuesday afternoon.

Saranac’s Andrew LePage took first in the boy’s race with a time of 16 minutes, 38 seconds. Saranac Lake’s Anderson Gray (16:55) was second, while Lauchlan Cheney-Seymour (17:09) rounded out the top three.

With the win, the boys stayed unbeaten in the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference. They entered the meet as New York state’s fifth-ranked team in the Class C poll.

On the girl’s side, Saranac Lake fell to Saranac but bested Ticonderoga and Schroon Lake. Evelyn Eller was the top finisher for the Red Storm, coming in fourth with a time of 20:51. Sierra O’Mahoney (21:41) placed sixth and was followed across the line by Maddie Grimone (21:48) in eighth place.

Blue Bombers sweep

BEEKMANTOWN — The Lake Placid runners were in Beekmantown Tuesday for a meet with the host and Ausable Valley. Both the boys and girls teams swept their meets on the course at Point Au Roche State Park, with the boys taking the top four spots and the girls capturing three of the top four.

Scott Schulz (16:39) took first, and was followed across the line by teammates Jeese Izzo (16:42), James Flanigan (16:49) and Kai Frantz (17:04). Blue Bomber eighth-grader Annie Rose-McCandlish captured the top spot in the girl’s race with a time of 19:27. Marli Damp (20:20) placed third and backed up by Sara Rose-McCandlish (21:36) in fourth.

Patriots end Red Storm’s season

CLINTONVILLE — The Saranac Lake girls soccer season came to end Tuesday, as the Red Storm suffered a 3-2 setback to AuSable Valley in the opening round of the Section VII, Class C playoffs.

Patriots Emily Remillard and Dru Gravelle scored first-half goals to put the Red Storm in a 2-0 hole at intermission, and Kayleigh Merrill then tallied at the 6:18 mark of the second half to get Saranac Lake back in the match.

AuSable, however, answered less than two minutes later when Avery Tromblee buried what proved to be the game-winning shot.

Trailing 3-1, Saranac Lake again battlled back and a tally by Grace Clark with 12:30 left on the clock slashed her team’s deficit to a single goal. But the Red Storm was unable to add a tying goal down the stretch as they finished their season winless.

AuSable Valley finished with an 11-7 edge in shots.

Mecalyn Sousa recorded eight saves in goal for Saranac Lake. Koree Stillwell made three stops in nets for the Patriots.
