PHS blanks SL in NSL finale

PLATTSBURGH — Friday night provided a bad news, good news scenario for the Saranac Lake boys soccer team.

The bad news for the Red Storm was they sufferered a lopsided 6-0 defeat at the hands of the Plattsburgh Hornet in the final match of the regular season for both squads.

The good news was the fact that the loss didn’t change where Saranac Lake finished in the standings and the setback also had no bearing on where the Red Storm’s seeding for the upcoming Class C playoffs.

Competing on turf under the lights, Saranac Lake was no match for Plattsburgh, as the Hornets scored all six of their goals in the opening half on the way to a 6-0 victory.

With the loss, Saranac Lake finished with a 6-5-1 mark, which landed the team in third place in Division I in the Northern Soccer Leauge.

Peru finished as Division I regular season champions and Plattsburgh was runner-up.

“Plattsburgh was head and shoulders above our team on that turf field,” Saranac Lake coach Josh Marlow said. “Their goals came fast and furious. They scored three times on breakaways that started from 50 yards out. The good thing was we switched to a sweeper-stopper defense in the second half and we shut them down, played them even.”

Marlow said he expects Saranac Lake to be the third seed in the Section VII, Class C playoffs, with Seton Catholic taking the top spot and Northern Adirondack seeded second.
