SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake boys and girls cross country teams earned three dual victories apiece Tuesday in a home meet against Lake Placid, EKMW and Northeastern Clinton.

Red Storm senior Madison Grimone was the overall winner in the girls’ race with a time of 21:12. Teammate Evelyn Eller took second in 22:01, followed by Lake Placid runners Marli Damp (22:28) and Annie Rose-McCandlish (22:58). Saranac Lake’s Sierra O’Mahoney placed fifth in 23:56.

Lake Placid’s Scott Schulz won the boys race in 17:26 by a hair over Anderson Gray, of Saranac Lake, who finished with the same time. Blue Bombers runners Jesse Izzo (17:39) and James Flanigan (17:42) placed third and fourth while Saranac Lake’s Lauchlan Cheney-Seymour was fifth in 17:47.

GIRLS SOCCER

Moriah 4, Lake Placid 3

MORIAH — The Moriah girls soccer team handed Lake Placid its first loss of the season in dramatic fashion Tuesday with a goal in the final minute of the game.

With 26 seconds left on the clock, Hailey Crossman found the back of the net to give the Vikings a 4-3 victory.

Lake Placid junior Mackenzie Kondrat scored her second goal of the game in the 26th minute of the second half to tie the match at 3-3. She also scored at 16:00 of the second half.

Teammate Lydia Bullock scored the Blue Bomber’s first goal at 21:10 of the first half as the teams entered the break tied at 1-1.

Shelby Jewtraw made six saves in goal for Lake Placid. Moriah held a 13-8 advantage in shots on goal.

Madison Olcott scored twice to lead the Vikings.

VOLLEYBALL

Lake Placid 3, AuSable Valley 1

CLINTONVILLE — The Lake Placid girls volleyball team rallied back from a one-game deficit to top AuSable Valley 3-1 in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference action Tuesday.

After falling 17-25 to start the match, the Blue Bombers strung together victories by scores of 25-18, 25-20 and 25-22 to claim the win.

Seniors Graci Daby and Laurell Miller led the way for Lake Placid. Miller finished with 10 points, 10 assists and nine kills, while Daby contributed 10 assists, nine points, nine kills and four aces. Olivia Sawyer also had a solid outing in the win with nine points, four aces and six kills.

Kayla Rock and Leah Shay combined for 25 points to pace the Patriots in the competive match.

Saranac Lake 3, Peru 1

SARANAC LAKE — A loss in the opening game provided a wake-up call for the Saranac Lake volleyball team, as the Red Storm swept the next three contests to take down Peru 3-1 Tuesday in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference action.

The Red Storm rallied from a 22-25 setback with wins in the next three games by 25-23, 25-20 and 25-17.

Katie Gay had a monster match serving for the Red Storm, finishing with 25 points. She also had five aces, six assists and five digs. Sydney Andronica also turned in a strong defensive effort with 13 digs. Olivia Bousquet paced Peru with 27 assists, 10 points and 10 digs.

“We were up and down, up and down and finally the girls found a level plane,” Red Storm coach Mike Navarra said. “We had the lead in the first game, Peru came back, and I think our girls kind of said ‘Whoa.’ We just worked through it and came out in the second game, took a big lead and never looked back.”

The win was the second in as many starts for the Red Storm, who next head into a showdown at Lake Placid Thursday.
