Caligiore preps for LPGA qualifying

OCOEE, Florida — Aimee Caligiore, of Lake Placid, capped her best National Women’s Golf Association tournament performance in relation to par last week in an event held at Forest Lake Golf Club.

The former Lake Placid Blue Bomber and St. Lawrence University All-American recorded scores of 71, 74 and 73 on the par-72 layout near Orlando, finishing with a 54-hole aggregate score of two over par 218. Caligiore, living and working in Orlando to continue her improvement, tied for 17th in a tournament played in hot, oppressive conditions.

“I made no big mistakes this week,” she said. “My iron play was not my best but I still hit a lot of greens, and my short game was really on point. I’ve spent a lot of time in recent weeks on chipping and pitching, and it was nice to see it pay off.”

Caligiore hit 37 greens in regulation, and saved par on 12 of 17 opportunities from off the green on the 6,233-yard course.

“Over the next month, my plan is to work on my iron play and keep improving the short game and putting,” she added. “Then I’ll play the Florida Open (August 11-13) before heading to Stage 1 of LPGA qualifying (August 24-27) in California. Last year, six over par for the four rounds advanced to Stage II. That’s my goal.”

To meet her Stage 1 expenses of $5,000 ($2,500 entry fee plus travel, room, board and rental car), Caligiore established a crowdfunding campaign. Donations are currently being gratefully accepted.
