Kroes leads locals at state tourney

Lake Placid’s Bjorn Kroes turned in the lowest score among the nine Section VII golfers competing in the NYSPHSAA golf championships to finish in a seven-way tie for 25th place in the two-day tournament that wrapped up Monday at Cornell University’s par-71 Robert Trent Jones-designed course in Ithaca.

Competing for the final time as a Blue Bomber, Kroes, a three-sport athlete, shot a six-over par 77 on Monday. He kicked off play on Sunday with an 81, and finished the tournament with a 158 total.

Kroes was one of three players from Lake Placid’s undefeated Section VII championship team that competed at Cornell. Junior Drew Maiorca carded rounds of 83 and 78 to finish tied for 41st, and senior Ryan Kane finished tied for 69th with rounds of 83 and 85.

Saranac Lake senior Tanner Courcelle finished with rounds of 97 and 96 to finish 97th.

No golfer in the tournament was able to finish with a below-par total after playing 36 holes in wet conditions. Two sophomores battled it out for the title, which was decided on the third playoff hole Monday evening. Nathan Han of Section I’s Somers High School took the victory by sinking a 10-foot putt to defeat Adam Xiao, of Manhasset High School of Section VIII. The pair topped the field with four-over par 146 totals to force the playoff.
