Placid golf polishes off another perfect season

PORT KENT — The Lake Placid golf team won its fourth-straight Champlain Valley Athletic Conference regular season championship Friday with a 6-0 victory over AuSable Valley at Harmony Hills Golf Club.

The Blue Bombers completed the season with a 10-0 record, their fourth time in a row with that same record.

Senior Bjorn Kroes turned in the best round of the day Friday, shooting a 2-over par 36 from the No. 1 position in the lineup. He opened the day with a par-3 then had bogeys on the next two holes before finishing with six pars to beat his opponent Ryan Thomas 36-47.

Drew Maiorca, a junior, was the next-best golfer Friday playing in the No. 2 spot. Maiorca shot a 37 to easily beat AuSable Valley’s Jeffrey Miller, who came in with a 50.

Ryan Kane fired a 40 from the No. 3 spot, and Sean Moore and Lars Kroes each carded 42s for Lake Placid. Kevin Geesler rounded out the Blue Bombers’ lineup with a 43 from the No. 6 position.

Lake Placid now heads into postseason play, which takes place Thursday and Friday next week at the Barracks Golf Course in Plattsburgh.

Saranac Lake 3.5, Northeastern Clinton 2.5

ROUSES POINT — The Saranac Lake golf team finished its Champlain Valley Athletic Conference schedule on a high note Friday, beating Northeastern Clinton 3.5-2.5 at North Country Golf Club.

Senior Kyler Darrah led the way for the Red Storm with a round of 41. Teammate Tanner Courcelle wasn’t far behind with a 42.

Saranac Lake went 7-3 in conference matches.

BASEBALL

Keene 3, Lake Placid 0

KEENE VALLEY — The Lake Placid baseball team’s season came to an abrupt end Friday afternoon against High Peaks rival Keene.

The Beavers put together just enough offense to support a spectacular pitching effort by Ethan Giglinto on the way to a 3-0 victory in the quarterfinal round of the Section VII, Class D tournament. Giglinto gave up just one hit and struck out 10 Lake Placid batters to earn the win on the mound.

Keene came into the game as the No. 2 seed in the tournament, while Lake Placid was seeded seventh. The Blue Bombers finished with a 1-10 overall record.

Keene heads into the semifinals with a 10-1 record.

Saranac 11, Saranac Lake 5

PICKETTS CORNERS — The Saranac Lake baseball team dropped its Section VII, Class B quarterfinal matchup 11-5 against Saranac Central on Friday.

With the win, the Chiefs earned a spot in the semifinals, where they will face Beekmantown on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

The Red Storm came into Friday’s game as the No. 6 seed, while Saranac was seeded third.

Saranac Lake finished the season with a 4-7 overall record.

SOFTBALL

AuSable Valley 10, Lake Placid 3

CLINTONVILLE — The AuSable Valley softball team’s offense came through Friday in a 10-3 victory over Lake Placid in the semifinal round of the Section VII, Class C tournament.

Lake Placid was the No. 3 seed and the Patriots were the No. 2 seed heading into the contest.

Beekmantown 12, Saranac Lake 7

BEEKMANTOWN — The Saranac Lake softball team’s came to an end Friday after a 12-7 loss to Beekmantown in the Section VII, Class B quarterfinals.
