Lacrosse seasons come to an end

High School Roundup

MASSENA — The season came to an end for the Saranac Lake boys lacrosse team on Monday, as Massena rallied from a big early deficit to claim an 11-10 victory in the first round of the Section X playoff tournament.

The Red Storm led most of the way. They jumped out to a 3-0 edge, held a 5-1 advantage, and were then on top 8-5 at halftime. The Red Raiders chipped away in the second half and eventually erased the 10-9 lead that Saranac Lake clung to with three minutes remaining in regulation.

“We jumped all over Massena at the start of the game,” Red Storm head coach Dermott Morgan said. “They didn’t know what hit them, but they are a good team, and they came back with a really strong third period.

“Again, we had our chances,” Morgan added. “We were right there, even at the end, but we just didn’t finish.”

Just a week ago, the Red Raiders routed the Red Storm 15-3 at Schroeter’s Field, but faced a much different team this time around.

Junior Jarrett Ashton paced Saranac Lake with three goals and an assist, and sophomore Hayden Plank also netted a hat trick in the loss. DJ Morgan chipped in a pair of goals and two assists, Emery Swanson scored twice, and JB Chapin and Brett Dawson recorded an assist each in the loss.

Morgan credited Red Storm goalie Ward Walton with another outstanding performance in the tight match.

Saranac Lake finished with a 7-9 overall record.

Massena, which won the regular season title a year ago, now moves on to face St. Lawrence in semifinal play, with Canton and Salmon River squaring off in the other semifinal matchup. Massena improved to 10-7 with Monday’s win.

After playing its most competitive lacrosse in years, the future looks bright for Saranac Lake, which will lose just two seniors in JB Chapin and Brian Byrne, who have seven years between them on the varsity roster. Chapin will be a big loss after he started for four years and was a leader and a top playmaker on the team.

“I’m disappointed the season came to an end, especially for JB and Brian,” Morgan said. “For the rest of our kids, I think they are coming back knowing they can be one of the top teams in the league.”

GIRLS LACROSSE

Heuvelton 15, Saranac Lake 8

HEUVELTON — The Saranac Lake’s girls team also finished its lacrosse season on Monday, falling 15-8 at Heuvelton in Section X playoff action.

The Red Storm entered the match as the No. 5 seed and were paced by Ryley Fischer’s four goals. Brooke Armstrong led the Bulldogs with five goals and Carin Sherwood chipped in four.

Saranac Lake finished the season with a 4-9 mark.

SOFTBALL

St. Lawrence 29, Tupper Lake 0

BRASHER FALLS — The Tupper Lake softball season came to an end Monday with a 29-0 loss to St. Lawrence in the semifinal round of the Section X, Class C tournament.

St. Lawrence pitcher Makiah Ramsdell struck out 12 and didn’t allow any hits to earn the win. The Larries, the top-seeded team in the tournament, earned a spot in the championship game against Potsdam.

Tupper Lake finished the season with an 0-16 record. St. Lawrence is 13-5.
