Storm surge to opening victory

CHAMPLAIN — The Saranac Lake baseball team opened its season with a 10-8 victory over Northeastern Clinton on Wednesday.

After digging themselves into a 6-0 hole after the first inning, the Red Storm defense tightened up the rest of the way and the offense came to life in the fourth and fifth innings. Saranac Lake scored three runs in the fourth and added six more in the fifth to overtake the lead.

Saranac Lake senior pitcher Brandon Meyer entered the game in relief of starter Casey Sturgeon in the second inning and rolled through the rest of the game. Meyer struck out four and gave up just two hits over the final six innings to earn the victory.

Saranac Lake senior Ben Salls recorded a single, a double and a triple, while Sturgeon, Meyer and Derek Strack each had two hits to add to the Red Storm’s hit total of 11.

The Red Storm are back in action today on the road against Ticonderoga.

SOFTBALL

Ticonderoga 8, Saranac Lake 2

SARANAC LAKE — The Ticonderoga softball team built up a big lead in the second inning and never let it go Wednesday on the way to an 8-2 victory over Saranac Lake.

The Sentinels posted five runs in the top of the second and added two more in the sixth to take control of the game. Saranac Lake scored single runs in the second and sixth innings.

Lindsay Reeve connected for two doubles to lead the Red Storm offensively. Morgan Farmer was tagged with the pitching loss after throwing all seven innings.

Haleigh Wright was the offensive star for Ticonderoga with a double and a triple, while teammate Sara Vradenburg recorded two doubles.

Saranac 8, Lake Placid 1

SARANAC — Paige Megliore and Hanna Whitney each had two hits for Lake Placid on Wednesday, but it wasn’t enough as Saranac walked away with an 8-1 victory.

Saranac led 2-0 after the first inning then piled on six more runs in the fourth and fifth innings to lock up the win. Taylor Alexander was credited with three hits, while teammates Elizabeth Trudeau, Skye O’Connell and Sam Wells had two hits apiece.

The Chiefs outhit Lake Placid 14-7 over the course of the game.

TRACK AND FIELD

CANTON — The Tupper Lake track and field teams excelled in the field events Wednesday in their opening dual meet of the season against Canton on the Hugh C. Williams Track.

Lumberjacks sophomore Kyler teRiele was the top thrower in the boys meet, winning the shot put and discus competitions. He landed a distance of 40 feet, 6 inches in the shot to beat teammate Logan Savage who took second with a 33-5. teRiele took first place in discus with a 110-9.

Tupper Lake freshman Aaron Clark took first place in the long jump with a 17-11. Second place went to Tupper sophomore Jessie Connor and Canton’s Bobby Beaudin, who both landed jumps of 17-2.

Alan Stuart of Tupper Lake tied for first in the high jump with Brandon Lorenc of Canton. Both recorded jumps of 5-6.

Tupper Lake senior Katie Zurek had another strong performance in the girls’ meet, winning the shot put event with a 34-8 and the discus with a 113-6. Senior teammate Morgan Sovey was second in both events, throwing 28-1.75 in the shot put and 59-3.5 in the discus.

Tupper Lake eighth-grader Rylee Fletcher won the 200-meter race with a time of 29.8 seconds.

The Lumberjacks were on the losing end in the team scoring in both the boys and girls meet. Canton won 185-80 in the girls’ meet and 140.166-59.833 in the boys’.

Tupper returns to action Friday on the road with an invitational at Indian River, before returning home for a meet against Ogdensburg and Potsdam on Wednesday, May 3.
