SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake boys and girls track teams opened their Champlain Valley Athletic Conference with a sweep, taking down visiting Plattsburgh in rainy conditions Tuesday afternoon.

In two fairly close contests, the Red Storm boys triumphed 75-53 and the girls won by a 71-61 score.

This spring, depth and experience should be a factor on both sides for Saranac Lake, which is kicking off its season with a combined roster of around 100 student-athletes. That held true against the Hornets, as upperclassmen and some new faces helped pave the way to victory for the Red Storm.

In the girls meet, seniors Brittany Shumway and Jada Meadows teamed up to notch seven wins for Saranac Lake, and three more team members — Logan Hochwald, Madison Grimone and Grace Clark — were all double winners.

“Senior leadership proved key in the first meet of the season,” Saranac Lake girls coach Jason Waksman said. “Our senior girls led the way for our younger girls. Twelve first-place finishes made the difference.”

Shumway picked up individual wins in the 800 and 1,500 meters and ran legs on the Red Storm’s first-place 3,200 and 1,600 relay teams. Meadows sprinted her way to victory in the 100 and ran legs on Saranac Lake’s winning 4×100 and 4×400 relays.

Hochwald took wins in the high jump and discus, Grimone won the 400 hurdles and ran on the winning 1,600 relay, and Clark took first in the 100 hurdles and ran a leg on the Red Storm’s 400 relay squad.

Sierra O’Mahony and Katie Hunt picked up single wins for Saranac Lake. O’Mahony won the 3,200 in 12 minutes, 46.9 seconds, while Hunt hurled the shot put 25 feet, 9 inches to triumph as a senior competing in track for the first time.

Saranac Lake boys head coach Cy Ellsworth said his athletes did what they had to do on a wet day after just coming off their two-week spring vacation.

“I was a big win because we haven’t beaten Plattsburgh in a while,” Ellsworth said. “It was ugly at times, but we came through. It was really the first time a lot of the kids have been out on the track.”

Anderson Gray posted three victories to lead the Saranac Lake boys. He took first in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs and also competed with the Red Storm’s winning 3,200 relay along with Ethan Wood, Tyler Martin and Lauchlan Cheney-Seymour.

Overall, Saranac Lake chalked up eight individual victories. Patrick Wamsganz, a freshman, earned two of those wins, taking first in the 400 and the long jump. Also for Saranac Lake, Devan Kidd triumphed in the 200, David Sullivan won the discus, and Sean Lincoln, a junior and newcomer to the team, grabbed the victory in the shot put.

De’Andre Watson paced Plattsburgh with three individual wins, taking first in the high jump, the triple jump and the 100-meter dash.

“It was a very challenging day for track and field,” Ellsworth said. “Extremely cold in Saranac Lake and rain from start to finish. Both teams put in an excellent effort.

“For us, it was a pretty good performance under bad conditions and with not much work coming off vacation,” Ellsworth added. “We will continue to get better.”

The Red Storm boys and girls will be back in action on Tuesday at Beekmantown.
