The Blue Bombers couldn’t match the sheer numbers of Plattsburgh’s track team, but the hometown runners and jumpers still put up some impressive individual performances.

The Hornets dominated the girls’ side of the meet against a slightly depleted Lake Placid team. Stalwart Gabby Armstrong was limited due to an ankle injury, and coach Bill Frazer said other kids were missing from the meet as well.

But despite the lack of numbers, the Bombers still came out on top in a few events.

Lake Placid won the 3,200 relay when Marli Damp, Lissy Ashley, Sarah Rose-McCandlish and Anya Morgan combined for a time of 11 minutes, 7 seconds in the longest race of the day. Senior Grace McGrew also won the 200, besting the field with a time of just 28.7 seconds, while Rose-McCandlish won the 3,000 in 13:06.

The boys fared better than the girls, but still dropped the overall meet. Track and field is scored with points, and smaller schools like Lake Placid and Tupper Lake often have trouble winning meets due to a lack of competitors, even though individual athletes may have outstanding performances.

On the boys’ side, the Bombers also won the 3,200 relay, with Stuart Baird, Scott Schulz, James Flanigan and Trent White easily besting the field with a time of 9:20. All four of those boys had a spectacular day, also capturing the 1,600 relay with a time of 3:53.

Baird won the high jump with a leap over the 5-foot, 4-inch bar, while White came within inches of the long jump school record, with a jump of 20-4. White also won the 400 with a time of 55.3 seconds.

Schulz was the fastest boy in the 800 with a time of 2:16, and Flanigan rounded out his day with a time of 5:15 in the 1,600.

“It was beautiful weather for a great meet and considering our kids have only been on the track for three days prior to this meet and we were missing some key athletes, we are really proud of their performances today,” Frazer said after the meet. “For Trent White’s first long jump of the year, he was only 4 inches off the school record. We are excited to see how all our kids will do now that we will start getting in some time on the track!”

Flanigan and Schulz were also on the school’s state championship cross-country skiing team, and Flanigan said he misses the cold.

“I’m a little thirsty right now,” Flanigan laughed after one of his races. “But I think it’s the same for everybody. I think I’m always a better competitor in the cold. It could be in my head, but I prefer the cold.”

Lake Placid goes to Ausable Valley for it’s next meet on Tuesday at 4:30.
