Martin secures 100th victory

PLATTSBURGH — The Lake Placid boys hockey team won its fifth game in a row Wednesday night with a 7-3 Champlain Valley Athletic Conference victory over Saranac.

It was head coach Butch Martin’s 100th career high school win as a head coach.

Sean Moore scored three goals in the first period and Hunter Spotts had one as the Blue Bombers raced out to a 4-0 lead. Saranac scored three of its own in the second period, but Lake Placid kept its offense firing with two in the second and another in the third.

Hayden Plank, Tyler Hinkley and Bauer Ward were each credited with goals for the Blue Bombers, who improved to 6-5 overall (3-0 CVAC) with the win.

Keegan Eick, Zach Miner and Nikalas Hamel accounted for the Chiefs’ goals.

Lake Placid outshot Saranac 32-14. Anders Stanton turned away 11 shots in goal for the Blue Bombers.

Northeastern Clinton 5, Saranac Lake 5, OT

ROUSES POINT — The Saranac Lake boys hockey team battled through three periods and an overtime Wednesday night, but were forced to settle for a 5-5 tie against Northeastern Clinton in a CVAC showdown.

The Cougars took control early with two goals in the first 10 minutes of the game. The Red Storm rebounded with goals by Dylan Amell, Brett Dawson and Austen Reyell to overtake the lead in the second period.

Dawson scored his second goal of the game at the 12:48 mark of the second period to give Saranac Lake a 4-3 advantage. Northeastern Clinton answered right back when Andrew Arless scored to set the score at 4-4 going into the third.

Reyell regained the lead for Saranac Lake with a goal at 4:37 of the third. Dawson and Drew Sturgeon assisted.

But the Cougars weren’t done yet as Aidan LaValley found the back of the net midway through the third. Neither team was able to break the tie through the end of the third or in overtime.

Saranac Lake outshot the Cougars 31-16. Bruno Freeman stopped 11 shots for the Red Storm (5-3-1 overall, 1-3-1 CVAC).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

AuSable Valley 71, Saranac Lake 30

SARANAC LAKE — The AuSable Valley girls basketball team set the tone early and never looked back Wednesday night in a 71-30 victory over Saranac Lake.

Roslyn McClatchie and Andrea Boon each scored seven points for the Red Storm. McClatchie connected for two 3-pointers.

AuSable Valley’s Madison McCabe led all scorers with 19 points.

The Patriots led 32-11 at halftime then outscored Saranac Lake 39-19 in the second half.
