Shumway takes 63rd at Federation meet

Saranac Lake senior Brittany Shumway finished off an outstanding first year of cross country Saturday in the prestigious Federation Championships held in Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls.

Shumway finished 63rd in a field of 249 of the best runners in the state of New York, from all difference classifications. She covered the 5-kilometer course in 20 minutes, 13 seconds to finish as the top female runner from Section VII.

Saratoga Springs sophomore Kelsey Chmiel won the girls race in 18:10, outlasting North Rockland freshman Katelyn Tuohy, who finished in 18:21. North Rockland won the team title led by Tuohy and fellow freshman Haleigh Morales, who finished fifth in 18:36.

Seton Catholic freshman Lea DeJordy also qualified for the race and finished 169th in 21:58.

Section VII qualified two runners in the boys race. Seton Catholic junior Caleb Moore earned a medal after finishing 30th overall with a time of 16:52. Saranac Central junior Andrew LePage finished 171st in 18:12.

Noah Carey, a senior from Guilderland, won the boys race in 16:06, just ahead of Davone Hernandez of Rome who crossed the line in 16:12 in a field of 246.

Shumway earned her spot at the Federation meet after placing 15th at the NYSPHSAA state championships on Saturday, Nov. 12 at Chenango Valley State Park in Chenango Forks. She finished that race in 19:50.3.

Shumway won the Section VII, Class C individual title on Nov. 4 at Cobble Hill Golf Club in Elizabethtown with a time of 18:15.

The Federation Championship is often considered the “true state meet” since it includes all the leagues in New York, including NYSPHSAA, PSAL, CHSAA and AIS.
