Storm spikers even at tourney

PICKETTS CORNERS – The Saranac Lake volleyball team traveled to compete in Saranac Central’s Campership Tournament on Saturday and finished with a 5-5 mark in pool play in a format where each contest went two games.

The Red Storm went up against AuSable Valley, Northeastern Clinton, Peru, Massena and Lake Placid, and in every match, each team won a set and lost one.

A dozen teams participated in the tournament, with the other pool consisting of teams from Chateaugay, Plattsburgh, Beekmantown, Ogdensburg and the host Saranac Chiefs.

“All the teams there were good,” Saranac Lake head coach Mike Navarra said. “We split with every one of them.”

Saranac Lake returns to league play this evening on the road against AuSable Valley. The Red Storm’s next home match will be on Thursday against Northern Adirondack.

BOYS SOCCER

Northern Adirondack 3, Lake Placid 0

ELLENBURG – Lake Placid was on the wrong end of 3-0 shutout score on the road against Northern Adirondack in Northern Soccer League Division II boys action Monday.

Bailey Cross scored two goals, Brett Juntunen found the back of the net once and Stephen Peryea added a pair of assists in the win. Cross netted his first marker less than two minutes into the match, and Juntunen upped the Bobcats edge to 2-0 when he buried a shot in the middle of the second half. Cross then sealed the win with his second goal with less than six minutes remaining in the contest.

NAC held an overwhelming 22-8 edge in shots. Kamm Cassidy made nine saves in goal for the Blue Bombers, who next play Wednesday at home against Willsboro starting at 4:30 p.m.

Peru 4, Saranac Lake 1

PERU – Saranac Lake got the early jump in Monday’s boys soccer match at Peru, but the Indians responded with the next four tallies to claim a 4-1 victory in Northern Soccer League Division I play.

Saranac Lake coach Josh Marlow said his team played well after jumping out to a 1-0 lead, but left frustrated after the Indians benefited after they were awarded three penalty kicks in the match.

Gabe Nuzzo paced Peru with a pair of goals, and L.J. Nuzzo and James Blaise scored a goal apiece in the win.

Sawyer Chase got Saranac Lake going with a goal 8:53 into the match, with Dzihad Cecunjanin assisting. Gabe Nuzzo then tied it up at the 24:06 mark of the stanza on the game’s first penalty kick. The Indians then went on to score two more times in the second half to claim the win.

“We just got manhandled in our last game, and for us to come back and play well and then have those Pks called against you, those just took all the wind out of our sails,” Marlow said. “We just have to shake that off and move on.”

Peru outshot Saranac Lake 19-14. Nick Stevens made five saves in goal for the Red Storm, who next play on the road Wednesday at AuSable Valley. Saranac Lake will also play at home Friday against Beekmantown starting at 4:30 p.m.
