Senior, Super Senior amateur tourney at Whiteface Club

LAKE PLACID – The New York State Women’s Senior and Super Senior Amateur Golf Championships will be held at the Whiteface Club and Resort Tuesday, Aug. 23 and Wednesday, Aug. 24. The two events will be held concurrently and will be admistered by the New York State Golf Association.

The 36-hole stroke play events, featuring 112 players from around the state, begin daily at 8 a.m. Practice rounds will be played Aug. 22.

“We are very proud to host the NYS Women’s Senior Amateur Championship once again at the Whiteface Club and Resort,” said Mark Sperling, CEO of the Whiteface Club Companies. “It’s an honor and a privilege to host so many wonderful golfers from throughout the state and provide them an opportunity to play on our course, which has been ranked as high as fourth among classic golf courses in the past couple of years.”

The championships will be conducted on the tree-lined, 118-year-old John Van Kleek design, situated just above the lake by which Lake Placid draws its name. It’s the 14th time the Whiteface Club has hosted this prestigious competition, in addition to four state women’s amateurs.

“The women love coming to Lake Placid and our golf course,” said PGA Club Professional J. Peter Martin. “We’ve had numerous state tournaments throughout the history of Whiteface. The players will see some of the best terrain a golf course architect could have. John Van Kleek designed a classic golf course here.”

The Whiteface track plays to a par of 71, and asks players to drive the ball accurately, while negotiating the course’s intricate greens complexes. Similar to the Olympic Course in Rio, much may be decided in the final three holes of the Whiteface layout, which concludes with a short par four and two par fives. Titles may not be determined until the last putt is holed on the final green.

Spectators are invited to attend for no admission fee.
