Rusty Nail locks up title

SARANAC LAKE – It’s softball championship week in Saranac Lake as the men’s and women’s final series have been taking place on their leagues’ respective diamonds.

So far, one winner has emerged as Rusty Nail completed a three-game sweep in its best-of-five competition against Foul Line in the men’s Black Fly league. Rusty Nail nailed down the title with a 14-4 victory Wednesday to win 3-0.

The series started out with a fairly tight matchup Monday that saw Rusty Nail come through with a 15-10 triumph. The team then went on to outscore Foul Line by a combined 28-7 during the next two games to earn the championship.

Both teams finished the regular season with 12-2 records, but Foul Line claimed the regular season title based on runs scored.

Women

The women’s league final series is turning out to be quite a bit more dramatic. After dropping the opener on Monday, the regular season champion Waterhole came from behind Wednesday to earn a 16-15 win over The Lanes to even the series at 1-1 and send it into Friday’s rubber match to decide the title.

Trailing 15-8 heading into its final at bat, the Waterhole plated eight runs in the top of the seventh to surge past The Lanes, which earlier in the game, owned a 12-4 advantage.

After jumping ahead, Waterhole sealed the deal in the bottom of the seventh when winning pitcher Ann Warner fanned the first two Lanes batters, and then, after giving up a single, was able to force an infield grounder that shortstop Jamie Gunther scooped up and fired to first base for the final out of the game.

Game three will take place Friday at Petrova Avenue starting at 6 p.m.
