To the editor:
Dear Peter Crowley:
As a person living with diabetes for 24 years, I felt outraged after reading your opionion piece, "Demonic possession." Your comments about people living with diabetes were inaccurate, biased and hurtful.
However, in this challange lies opportunity. A support group for people living with Type 1 diabetes has recently been established in Plattsburgh. We meet the fourth Tuesday of every month between 7 and 8 p.m. in the cafeteria at Champlain Valley Physicians Hopsital. Open to people living with diabetes and the family members and friends of people living with diabetes, this is a group that provides support, assistance, hope, compassion and understanding.
I invite you, Peter, to our next meeting. This is an opportunity for you to learn more about diabetes. This is an opportunity for you to meet the many faces of diabetes: the amazing, resilient, strong, compassionate and dedicated people who live 24/7 with an illness that, despite numerous advancements and progress, remains misunderstood. This is an opportunity for you to address your own bias and misunderstanding, become educated and help advocate for rather than stigmatize against.
Our next meeting is Tuesday, May 27 at 7 p.m. All are welcome. Hope to see you there, Peter!
