Red Storm race to slalom victory

SARANAC LAKE - The Saranac Lake girls alpine team took first place in the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival slalom race Wednesday at Mount Pisgah Ski Center.

Sheila Decker led the way for the Red Storm by taking first place with runs of 38.37 seconds and 39.06 seconds for a total time of 77.43.

She was followed by teammate Macy Fischer, who finished the first run in 41.52 and the second in 43.17 for a total time of 84.69.

Third place went to independent skier Kori Clark, who finished with an overall time of 85.91.

The race included schools from sections III and VII. Section III was represented by Old Forge, Holland Patent, South Lewis, Lowville, Manlius Pebble Hill, as well as some independent racers. Saranac Lake and Lake Placid were the Section VII schools.

The next fastest local time after Fischer went to Emily Eaton of Lake Placid who took 10th in 93.36. Aurelle Foggarty of Saranac Lake took 11th in 94.14. Erin Skufca of Lake Placid took 12th in 97.42 and Gabby Domagala took 13th in 97.89.

Teammates Jacinda Riggs and Claire Bickford of Saranac Lake took 24th and 25th. Riggs finished in 122.36 and Bickford clocked a 133.64 total. Morgan Miller of Saranac Lake took 28th in 146.97.

The race was the second in two days for local skiers. The first race was a giant slalom event at Whiteface on Tuesday for the Lake Placid Winter Carnival.

Saranac Lake took third in that race. Once again, Decker led the way for the Red Storm. This time she came in second, with runs of 42.64 and 41.99 for an overall time of 1:24.6.

Tara Seigle of Holland Patent took first with an overall time of 1:24.1, just beating Decker. Danielle Bennincasa of Holland Patent took third in 1:27.3.

The second fastest local time went to Fischer, who had runs of 46:58 and 48:45 for an overall time of 1:35 for 11th place. Skufca and Eaton led Lake Placid with times of 1:36.5 and 1:37.2 for 14th and 15th place, respectively.

Barrett Smith of Lake Placid took 17th in 1:38.8. Alexis Stephenson of Saranac Lake took 22nd in 1:45.6 and Bickford took 27th in 2:11.1.

Results from both events will be used to qualify student-athletes to the NYSPHAA state championships being held at Bristol Mountain, Feb. 24-25.
