SARANAC LAKE - Jon and Cynthia Gorgas' third child is the first baby born this year at Adirondack Medical Center.

Joseph Jethro Gorgas was delivered via planned Caesarean section at 7:56 a.m. Jan. 2 at the Saranac Lake hospital. He weighed 7 pounds, 9 ounces and was 20-and-three-quarter inches long.

Cynthia Gorgas said she didn't expect to give birth to the first baby of 2014.

"I thought for sure someone would deliver on the 1st," she said. "I think it's something we'll probably always remember and tell him when he's older."

The Ray Brook couple said they picked their son's first and middle names because of their Biblical connotations. Jon Gorgas also said he researched the family's genealogy and learned that Joseph was the name of the first Gorgas to come to America from the Netherlands.

Jon, 30, and Cynthia, 32, have been married for eight-and-a-half years. Their two other children, 6-year-old Lily and 3-year-old Sandy, have been staying with other family members and hadn't met their new brother when the Enterprise visited the hospital Friday, but they will get to see him today, Jon Gorgas said.

"I'm sure they'll be happy when they finally get to meet him," Cynthia said. "We didn't know whether we were having a boy or a girl this time, so they were happy to hear (it was a boy)."

Joseph is the first of the Gorgas' three children to be born locally. Lily was delivered at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt. Sandy was born at Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh.

"It's been a great experience here," Cynthia said. "It's so much more relaxed."

"This is our favorite spot of all three," Jon Gorgas said. "The rooms are nicer. The staff here have been great."

The Gorgases said they hope to bring Joseph home from the hospital on Sunday.
