President wrong to snub Russia’s Olympics

December 21, 2013
Adirondack Daily Enterprise

To the editor:

President Obama has made a bad decision by snubbing Russia. Neither he nor his vice president Biden will attend, and by sending a delegation of two openly gay people to represent the U.S., our relationship with Russia will only continue to deteriorate. Olympics should be free of politics, and the focus should be on the athletes. The Olympics were to bring nations together and compete on the playing fields and not the battlefields.

There are many avenues for President Obama to show support for gay rights, but do not use the Olympics.

I expect President Putin is mad and will retaliate, and some innocents will pay the price. Snowden may give him some pointers, too.

Would have President Obama done this if the Olympic site was in a Muslim country with even stronger anti-gay laws? I think not.
