Gordon J. Lawrence, 89, passed away on Friday, Dec. 13, 2013.
Mr. Lawrence was raised in Lake Placid and resided in Camillus, N.Y., for the last 60 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II serving as an aircraft navigator, flight engineer and mechanical instructor. He worked at Franklin Aircooled Motors in Liverpool, N.Y., as an aircraft and helicopter engine test engineer before joining Mohawk Airlines at Hancock Field, Syracuse, in 1961 as an FAA Airframe & Powerplant certified mechanic. He retired from US Airways in 1985 after 25 years of service. He was a private pilot and member of the Experimental Aircraft Association. He was a member of Camillus United Methodist Church, American Legion and VFW.
He is survived by his cherished wife of 67 years, Lucille Lawrence; a daughter, Linda Coker of Fort Worth, Texas; his sons, Gordon "Kip" Lawrence II of Lakeville, N.Y., Mark of Yorktown, Va., Russell of Cary, N.C., and Scott of Charlottesville, Va.; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Camillus with burial in the North Elba Cemetery, Lake Placid, near the airport and ski jumps.
