Bobcats sweep weekend matchups

PAUL SMITHS - It was a winning weekend for the Paul Smith's College athletics teams, as men's and women's soccer and the rugby squad all posted victories on Saturday.

The Bobcats women's soccer team improved to 4-0 by blanking Vermont Tech 5-0. Ellie Matalavage paced Paul Smith's with a pair of goals and Kara Nipper and Ashley Andy added a marker each. Caitlyn Willis and Nicole Landry recorded single assists for the winners.

The Bobcats held a 19-4 edge in shots. Asenath Brooks and Jenny McGinn combined to earn the shutout in nets. Brooks made three saves in the opening half and McGinn stopped one shot in the second half.

The men edged Vermont Tech 1-0 on a goal scored by Jeff Schmidt at the 13:22 mark of the first half with Anthony Ventello picking up the assist. In a match that saw the 'Cats hold an 11-4 advantage in shots, Ryan Little earned the win in nets.

With the win, the Bobcats improved to 3-0.

The women's and men's matches were both Yankee Small College Conference contests.

In rugby, Paul Smith's claimed a 34-17 victory over Siena in a match played at the Brighton Memorial Park in Gabriels. The 'Cats will be back on the same pitch Saturday to face Oneonta starting at 1 p.m.
