Funding tops $768,562 for border, port security

Northern and central New York are set to receive $768,562 in federal funding for border and port security through the Federal Emergency Management Agency, U.S. Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced Friday.

Of that, $617,022 will go to St. Lawrence, Jefferson, Oswego and Cayuga counties through the Operation Stonegarden Program for fiscal year 2013 to enhance cooperation and coordination among local, tribal, territorial, state and federal law-enforcement agencies that jointly work to secure the U.S. border with Canada.

The senators also announced $131,625 to the port of Ogdensburg and $19,915 to the port of Oswego through the Port Security Grant Program.

"We must always remain vigilant and make the right investments to keep our ports and borders secure," Gillibrand said in a press release.

The Operation Stonegarden funding totals $55 million for this fiscal year, and New York is set to receive $1,707,382. St. Lawrence County will receive $280,000, Jefferson County will receive $136,498, Oswego County will receive $100,801, and Cayuga County will receive $99,723.
