Weather eases strong opinions

July 15, 2013
Editorial , Adirondack Daily Enterprise

Summer - especially a stretch of glorious weather in the heart of the season - is a hard time to write editorials.

There are very big deals going on locally, in Albany, in Washington and around the world. It's not that we don't care - we do. It's just that it's hard to muster the sentences to opine about them.

It's not just us feeling the opinion well drying up in the sun. The flow of letters to the editor has slowed to a trickle, too.

Not that life is necessarily relaxed - it's still quite busy - but the weather does set a tone. At the moment, it feels easier to live and let live.

Funny how a little sun will do that.

All winter long, Adirondackers hibernate and barely see their neighbors and friends. Now's the season when people try to get in as much family time, friend time, outdoor recreation time, outdoor work time, etc., as they can.

They tend to spend less time in their heads and more time out in the world with others.

That's a very good thing.

So live on. Do good stuff, or enjoy doing not much of anything at all. Spend as much time as possible with the people you care about, but also spare some attention for people around you whom you don't know - yet. There are a lot of extra people in town this time of year.

Rain and cold and letters to the editor will come back, and believe it or not, that's good. There is a time and a season for everything. But please excuse our Opinion page if it's a little light on local material right about now.
