Massena man presumed dead in Hudson River

July 2, 2013
By the Enterprise staff and The Associated Press

LAKE LUZERNE - A St. Lawrence County man is presumed drowned after going over a waterfall on a raft - one of two men missing in northern New York rivers, where heavy rains have caused treacherous currents.

Rescue crews and scuba teams from Warren and Saratoga counties searched the Hudson River in the village of Lake Luzerne Sunday evening after restaurant patrons videotaped a person going over Rockwell Falls on a small raft. The raft resurfaced without the man, who the Albany Times-Union has identified as Brian Cromie, 42, of Massena.

The search was called off because of the high water. Authorities weren't available Monday afternoon to say when it would resume.

In Washington County, police divers searched Monday but found no sign of 39-year-old Richard Kelley of Whitehall. He was swept underwater while swimming in the Mettawee River with his family Saturday. State police say that search will resume as conditions allow.
