SARANAC LAKE - A local woman was arrested Saturday after police say she stole $100 from an elderly man.

Teresa A. Gowan, 50, of Saranac Lake, was charged with third-degree robbery, a class D felony, and second-degree attempted assault, a class E felony. She also faces a misdemeanor count of fourth-degree criminal mischief.

Police said Gowan was arrested after they responded to a complaint of an unwanted person at a local residence around 2 p.m. Saturday. Police Chief Bruce Nason wouldn't identify more specifically where the incident took place.

He said Gowan forcefully took $100 cash from the elderly man, who is 96 years old. Nason said the two know each other but are not related.

Gowan is also accused of trying to injure the man by "forcing his fingers back on his hand, and squeezing and grabbing his facial area," Nason said.

During the dispute, Gowan allegedly grabbed the phone from the victim while he was trying to call police, although he was eventually able to call for help. Gownan was still at the residence when police arrived, Nason said.

The chief said he didn't know why Gowan allegedly took the man's money. She was processed, arraigned in village court and remanded to the Franklin County Jail in Malone in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond.
