May 24, 2013
Adirondack Daily Enterprise

To the editor:

St. Bernard's School is pleased to announce that we will offer the Safe Sitter Child Care Course on Tuesday, June 25, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at St. Bernard's School, 63 River St., Saranac Lake. The one-day course is for boys and girls ages 11 to 14. Registration for the program is open until June 18. The Safe Sitter instructors for the course are Ray Dora, St. Bernard's School principal; Donna Dora, retired teacher; and Shellie Manning, our nurse educator. The first 12 students to register will be the class members for the June 25 course.

The Safe Sitter program is a medically accurate program that teaches young adolescents, ages 11 to 14, how to handle emergencies when caring for younger children. The cost is $29.

Scholarships are available if the cost is a hardship. We do not want the fee to keep any student from participating. To register your son or daughter, call Donna Dora, 518-637-7829. Registration forms and information packets are available at the Saranac Lake Middle School office, St. Bernard's School office or can be mailed to you.

Thousands of young adolescents across the country have been trained by Safe Sitter Instructors to handle life-threatening emergencies. During this one-day course, students get hands-on practice in basic life-saving techniques so they are prepared to act in a crisis.

Safe Sitters also receive helpful tips to make them more confident caregivers. They learn safety precautions, how to understand the needs of children of different ages and even the business of babysitting.

To successfully complete the Safe Sitter program, students must pass a rigorous practical and written test to show that they have mastered the key concepts and have the skills necessary to handle an emergency.

For more information about Safe Sitter, contact Donna Dora, Safe Sitter coordinator, at 518-637-7829, or www.safesitter.org.

Sincerely,

Ray Dora, principal
