Speaking for the deer

May 22, 2013
Adirondack Daily Enterprise

To the editor:

Team No. 1: forest rangers, EnCon, wildlife department, law enforcement, politicians, teachers, churches, forestry - lots of money and access to media.

Team No. 2: trappers, hunters, fishermen, hikers, birdwatchers - only allowed 300 words or less a month in newspapers.

Team No. 3: animals - cannot read or write or watch TV. How can Team No. 3 win?

I'm trying to be the voice for the deer.

1. A new deer study is needed in Hamilton County, especially around Speculator. The old study was wrong. (They said deer were starving.) Have deer moved into logging areas where brush and weeds are waist high?

2. Have checkpoints in hunting season to voluntarily collect head, legs, lungs, liver for age and disease where killed. Fish and game clubs would gladly man checkpoints.

3. Check deer, moose, beaver, eagles (?), fisher population in wilderness (low due to less deer kill in winter).

4. Give longer camping permits to people who care about wildlife in wilderness, especially trappers.

5. Pushing unwanted campers into wilderness will cause milfoil. Lean-tos are already overcrowded; what's next? More lean-tos and toilets.

6. Study on deer feeding. If it's determined it's food, let's feed deer back away from towns and roads.

7. Are forest rangers and EnCon for or against gun control? What are goals for wilderness in the future?

8. Snow machines along main roads or rail trails.

Sportsmen, if you like these ideas, pass them along for me.

Wild forest forever,

Lewis M. Page
