SARANAC LAKE - Like Daffest, First Night Saranac Lake is a relatively new seasonal festival that has quickly established itself as a fixture of the village calendar. And during this Daffest, you can get a taste of First Night and also help it pay for the slate of entertainment for this coming New Year's Eve.
On Saturday night at the DownHill Grill, First Night presents a concert by Tall County and Steve Langdon, starting with Langdon at 9 p.m.
Tall County is three-fifths of Frankenpine, a New York City acoustic band that was popular here - having in its ranks former Saranac Lakers Colin DeHond and Ned Rauch. When founding Frankenpine members Matthew and Kim Chase moved from the city to Beacon last year, the geographical separation made it too hard for the band to continue. The three members remaining in the city - Ned and Liz Rauch, and DeHond - kept going under a new name, Tall County. They recorded a five-song EP, "Shine," produced by Beehive Productions of Saranac Lake, and released it in February.

Langdon is a leading local guitarist and singer, focusing on Delta and Piedmont blues. Originally from Elizabethtown, he has toured Germany in the 1990s as guitarist for the Professor Washboard Band, and been an interior caretaker in the High Peaks Wilderness, which gave him plenty of time to hone his chops. Now he lives in Saranac Lake, where he has performed extensively.
