Police shot and killed a man Tuesday night after he allegedly fled from and later assaulted a trooper.
State police Lt. John Coryea confirmed this morning that a male suspect died from a gunshot wound in the town of North Hudson. Few details have emerged yet about the incident. State police were expected to hold a press conference in Lewis this morning to release more information.
Coryea said a female trooper pursued a suspect on Interstate 87, the Adirondack Northway, prior to the shooting.
"I don't know the cause of the initial reason for the stop," Coryea said. "All that I can say, that I know for sure, is there was a vehicle pursuit, and it then turned into a foot pursuit."
The suspect apparently abandoned his vehicle in the vicinity of Exit 29 and began running.
"At some point during the foot pursuit, the suspect engaged in a physical altercation with a trooper," Coryea said. "A second trooper who responded ended up shooting and killing him.
"Both troopers are in good health," he added.
